COMING FROM A BANK

Credit analyst to broker

You know why files are declined better than any broker. The move is learning to find the clients whose files you can make fund.

Credit analysts and adjudicators arrive with the skill most brokers take five years to build: they can read a file and know its outcome. What they have rarely done is find the client, sit across from them, and sell the plan. This guide is honest about that gap and about how quickly analysts close it once they see the other side of the file.

What transfers

Reading a file

Income analysis, debt service, credit interpretation, red flags. You do in minutes what new brokers do in hours, and you do it correctly.

Policy fluency

You know what the guidelines actually say, which makes you very hard to mislead and very good at presenting a file to a lender.

Documentation discipline

You know what a complete file looks like. Clients and lenders both notice.

Structuring the fix

When a file fails, you know which lever moves it: co borrower, down payment, amortisation, a different product.

What changes

Finding the client

Nobody sends you files any more. Twenty conversations a week from your own network and partners is the new job, and it is learnable.

Selling the plan

Explaining to a client why the structure is right, and asking for the business. Uncomfortable for a month, natural by month three.

The B side

You may have adjudicated only prime. The alternative and private tiers are where declined files fund, and the desk teaches them fast.

The income shape

Salary becomes commission with a lag. Runway matters more for analysts because the pipeline starts empty.

Find your path

The first ninety days

Weeks one to four: licence, CRM, a written list of every person you know who buys, sells, lends or advises, and an announcement to all of them. Weeks five to eight: shadow an experienced broker on three client meetings, run your own first three, and take every declined file scenario in the team chat as practice. Weeks nine to twelve: first funded file, first B lender placement, and a referral partner who has learned you can tell them in ten minutes whether their buyer can be financed.

Our approach

The conversation is confidential and nothing is said to your employer. Clients you originate as a broker are yours, including the renewal and the referral. The client list you built at the bank stays at the bank, and we will not ask you for it. What we carry is the licensing paperwork, the lender registrations and the first hard files while you learn where they go.

Common questions

Do credit analysts make good mortgage brokers?
Often excellent ones once the client side clicks, because the technical half of the job is already done. The first year is about conversations, not files.
How do I get clients as a former analyst?
Your network is wider than you think: every colleague, every realtor whose files you approved, every friend who has ever asked you to look at a mortgage. Start there.
Is my underwriting experience valued at a brokerage?
Very. Brokers here with underwriting backgrounds become the people the team chat asks, and some end up on the Deal Desk.
