How do I transfer my mortgage licence in Alberta?

SHORT ANSWER

The change is processed through RECA with your new brokerage, which submits the request to bring your authorisation across. You do not requalify.

In Alberta mortgage professionals are authorised through the Real Estate Council of Alberta, and your authorisation is attached to the brokerage you work for. Moving brokerages is a change processed through RECA, initiated by the incoming brokerage, not a new application. Your education and your authorisation stay with you.

In practice the new brokerage submits the request through the RECA system, your former brokerage confirms the end of the relationship, and RECA updates the register. Confirm the current fee and processing time with RECA directly, because both change and neither is worth guessing at when a closing date depends on it.

Time it against the renewal cycle. Alberta authorisations renew on 30 September, so a move planned for late September collides with the busiest week in the RECA queue. Either move well before it or wait until after.

As everywhere, the regulator is the easy part. Read your agreement for notice and file clauses, map the live pipeline with both brokerages, and start lender registrations under the new brokerage in parallel so you can submit from day one.

Our approach

A transfer here is planned around your pipeline, not ours. We map every live file with you, run the licence transfer and the lender registrations in parallel, and line up the first hard file for the Deal Desk so your first week is a funded file rather than a form. Clients you originate are yours, including the renewal and the referral, and that is written down.
