Alberta licenses mortgage associates through the Real Estate Council of Alberta (RECA). To qualify you complete two courses in order, Fundamentals of Mortgage Brokerage and the Practice of Mortgage Brokerage, pass each provider's course exam and RECA's pre licensing exam for each, then apply for your licence through a brokerage that agrees to sponsor you. Searches for a mortgage broker course in Calgary or Edmonton land in the same place: both courses are delivered online, so you complete them from anywhere in the province.
To become a mortgage associate in Alberta you complete two RECA recognised courses online, at about $1,500 each, then the RECA exams, a criminal record check, brokerage sponsorship and the $575 licence fee. Expect around $4,000 all in and three to nine months across both courses and exams.
Alberta Mortgage Brokers Association (AMBA) and Alberta Real Estate School, both RECA recognised. AMBA lists Fundamentals at $1,500 including a student affiliate membership; Alberta Real Estate School at $1,497. The Practice course is priced similarly. Budget about $3,000 for both.
A course exam from the provider, then RECA's pre licensing exam, for each course. RECA exams run around $235 plus GST per attempt, 70 percent to pass, two attempts.
Self paced online, six months to complete each course from your start date, with paid extensions available. After the Practice course you have three months to pass the pre licensing exams.
RECA's licence application fee, plus a Certified Criminal Record Check. Your sponsoring brokerage submits the application.
The course teaches the rules. It does not teach you how to structure a self employed file, which lender takes a bruised credit refinance, how to build a pipeline before your first pay cheque, or what a normal day looks like. Read a day in the life of a mortgage broker, what the job actually is, the first 90 days plan, and what to look for in your first brokerage.
Leave your name, province and the month you expect to write the exam. We will check in around then, and when you have passed we will walk you through what a brokerage needs from you.
We onboard licensed brokers only, so the licence is yours to earn before we can help with anything else. After that you get weekly lender training, a team chat where new and experienced brokers answer around the clock, and senior brokers who will work your first files alongside you. There is no scripted programme with a guaranteed timeline. There is a room full of people who pick up.
