How long does it take to become a mortgage broker?

SHORT ANSWER

A few weeks to three months in Ontario, several months in BC because of the course assignments, and three to nine months in Alberta across two courses and two exams.

The timeline depends on the province, because each one sets its own course and exam. Ontario is the fastest route: one approved course, one exam and an FSRA licence application, which most people finish in a few weeks to three months.

British Columbia takes several months, mainly because the course includes assignments as well as the exam. Alberta takes three to nine months, because new entrants complete two courses and two exams before the Real Estate Council of Alberta issues a licence.

In every province the application goes in through a licensed brokerage, so line one up while you study. That way the licence is not held up waiting for a decision after you pass.
