What is the difference between a mortgage associate and a mortgage broker in Alberta?

SHORT ANSWER

A mortgage associate is the entry licence and works under a brokerage. A mortgage broker has at least two years of licensed experience in the last five, has passed the Mortgage Brokers Program and can run a brokerage.

The Real Estate Council of Alberta licenses both. Everyone starts as a mortgage associate: two courses, two exams and a brokerage to work under, then a licence.

The mortgage broker licence comes later. It requires at least two years of licensed experience within the last five years and a pass in the Mortgage Brokers Program. A licensed mortgage broker can run a brokerage, which an associate cannot.

For most people the associate licence is the job for the first years. The broker licence matters when you want to own or lead a brokerage.

Our approach

We onboard licensed brokers only, so the licence is yours to earn before we can help with anything else. After that you get weekly lender training, a team chat where new and experienced brokers answer around the clock, and senior brokers who will work your first files alongside you. There is no scripted programme with a guaranteed timeline. There is a room full of people who pick up.
